Ann Bryans letter October 16th, 2000 To whom it may concern: Mr. Baer, in photographing this very touchy subject, is a pioneer. Unfortunately, among the elderly and gravely ill, pressure ulcers are all to common. Publicity of this subject, such as Mr. Baer's photo essays, can be very instructive to the general public as well as care givers at home. I applaud his efforts to bring this controversial subject to the forefront. Looking at wounds is not very pleasant, and like many aspects of our American culture, out of sight is out of mind. Skin can and will breakdown if people are immobile and are left in one position too long. A 20 year old can develop a pressure ulcer, though admittedly not as quickly as an older or ill person if left to lie in one position too long. People cared for at home and in the hospital or nursing homes do develop pressure ulcers, despite the best intentions of the caregivers, but are preventable with adequate support surfaces and turning schedules, plus nutrition and treatment of underlying disease conditions. I hope that you will display Mr. Baer's photographs. Respectfully yours, Ann Bryans, RN CWOCN Rose Medical Center 4567 E. 9th Ave. Denver, CO 80200 |
